John Shields was born in Kellystown, Adamstown, County Wexford, Ireland, one of 10 children. He immigrated to the US shortly before 1884. He worked initially as a blacksmith's apprentice in West Baltimore but began working for Gaun M. Hutton by 1900 as a florist and gardener at his home Alexandroffsky at 838 Hollins Street, Baltimore. He later moved to Irvington where he worked as a gardener at Hutton's Crimea Estate. He also accompanied the Hutton family to Newport in the summers to take care of the gardens of their home Shamrock Cliff. In 1894, he married Mary Frances Wheeler and they had 6 children, 5 of which survived childhood.
